From the Old Fish Market to the Basilica of San Nicola

 

Our journey begins at Piazza Ferrarese, once home to the old fish market, and continues to Piazza Mercantile, the heart of Bari's "dolce vita." From there, we’ll enter the Nicolaian district, where the majestic Basilica of San Nicola stands. A symbol of openness and tolerance, the basilica is a place of worship for Christians of different denominations. Over time, it has become an important pilgrimage site, especially following the fall of communist regimes, attracting even more visitors.

 

A Step Back in Time

 

As we continue, we’ll reach the Catedral of San Sabino, where we’ll stop to admire its stunning exterior. The walk then leads us to the imposing Norman-Swabian Castle, a medieval fortress that offers a fascinating historical perspective. We’ll also visit the historic Marnarid shop, a place that has preserved local traditions and flavors since 1866, offering a taste of Bari’s culinary past. Here, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by the scents and memories of a bygone era.

 

Strada delle Orecchiette: Tradition and Iconic Charm in the Heart of Bari

 

One of the most iconic stops on our tour is the famous Arco Basso Street, also known as the Strada delle Orecchiette. Here, you’ll be greeted by smiling women making fresh homemade pasta, a tradition passed down through generations. Its fame is so widespread that it’s been featured in advertising campaigns for major brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Adidas.

 

A Special Treat at the End of the Tour

Basilica of San Nicola:

Head to the Basilica of San Nicola, one of the city's main places of worship. Admire the Romanesque and Baroque architecture and discover the story of San Nicola, the patron saint of Bari.

Cathedral of San Sabino

Continue the tour by visiting the Cathedral of San Sabino, another important religious building in Bari Vecchia. Admire its majestic columns and marvel at the frescoes and artworks inside.

Castello Svevo
